Market Notes

Compared to last week, feeders sold uneven. Steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 lower, mid weight steers from 500-750 lbs traded steady to 5.00 higher and a light test of heavier weights sold with a lower undertone. Heifers under 750 lbs sold firm to 3.00 higher and again a light test of heavier weights sold with a lower undertone. Demand was moderate to good for a moderate supply. Despite trading in the green on Tuesday, cattle futures have had some rough trading sessions over the last week while corn is still moving higher, with May trading over $6.00 a bushel. Also, last weeks steady money for fed cattle took some optimism and excitement out of the market after there was an anticipation for a higher market. Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 lower and bulls sold steady.

Supply included: 81% Feeder Cattle (45% Steers, 51% Heifers, 4% Bulls); 15% Slaughter Cattle (83% Cows, 17% Bulls); 4% Replacement Cattle (72% Stock Cows, 28% Bred Cows). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 38%.
