Market Notes

Compared to last week, steers sold firm to 5.00 higher with the most advance on the 550-650 lb weight range and heifers sold steady. Demand was good. Supply was light to moderate, affected by the recent rain and muddy conditions. Feeder cattle futures and corn have been bouncing around the last few trading days, Tuesday corn was up and feeder cattle were down. Also, Friday's COF report was not bullish like estimated, another market factor. Despite all this, buyers were aggressive in their bidding to own cattle with the summer and fall futures contracts looking attractive over an optimism that the worst of the burden of high numbers of cattle is in the rear view mirror. Slaughter cows sold 2.00-4.00 higher, bulls mostly steady.

Supply included: 87% Feeder Cattle (63% Steers, 36% Heifers, 1% Bulls); 9% Slaughter Cattle (94% Cows, 6% Bulls); 3% Replacement Cattle (100% Stock Cows). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 49%.
