Market Notes
Compared to last week, the majority of steers and heifers sold 3.00-8.00 higher, steady in spots on calves. A load of yearling heifers off grass sold with a sharply higher undertone. Demand was good for a moderate supply that featured more yearlings this week, but there were still several attractive consignments of calves on hand as well. The futures markets supported the cash trade Tuesday with corn sharply lower and cattle higher, these markets have been quite volatile lately as traders and analysts try to gauge the yield and acres of the corn crop. A large offering of cows was brought to town again as drought conditions worsen but it's sure not just culls, producers are forced to start selling spring pairs and quality bred cows. Some dispersals of reputation cows were on hand, most of which sold to go out of state. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady.
Supply included: 77% Feeder Cattle (44% Steers, 52% Heifers, 4% Bulls); 13% Slaughter Cattle (100% Cows); 11% Replacement Cattle (6% Stock Cows, 37% Bred Cows, 57% Cow-Calf Pairs). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 48%.
