Market Notes
Compared to last week, the majority of steers under 650 lbs traded 10.00-15.00 higher and those over 650 lbs sold firm to 3.00 higher. Heifer calves under 550 lbs 6.00-10.00 higher and those over 550 lbs sold firm based on light comparisons from last week. Demand was good to very good with more favorable weather conditions for both buyers and sellers than last week. The quality was attractive again with reputation strings of mostly home-raised cattle throughout the day. Despite the slightly sluggish feel to the overall cattle market the last couple weeks, the expected bullishness could be felt from buyers orders Tuesday as spring inches closer and we enter a historic period of tighter numbers of cattle which was confirmed by USDA's recent release of the cattle inventory report. Slaughter cows sold 4.00-8.00 higher, spots 10.00 higher.
Supply included: 92% Feeder Cattle (66% Steers, 30% Heifers, 4% Bulls); 7% Slaughter Cattle (92% Cows, 8% Bulls); 1% Replacement Cattle (57% Stock Cows, 43% Bred Cows). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 60%.
