Market Notes

Compared to last week, steer calves under 500 lbs sold steady to firm, 500-700 lbs 5.00-8.00 higher gaining back last weeks losses and then some and over 700 lbs steady to 3.00 higher. Heifers traded 2.00-5.00 higher. Demand was good to very good for a moderate supply. The quality was good and most of the cattle were weaned with a few long weaned yearlings offered as well. Cattle futures have traded higher and corn lower for the most part this week and the fall and winter Live Cattle contracts trading near or above the $1.30 mark are making feeder cattle more attractive. Slaughter cows sold 4.00-5.00 lower.

Supply included: 94% Feeder Cattle (59% Steers, 41% Heifers, 1% Bulls); 5% Slaughter Cattle (91% Cows, 9% Bulls); 1% Replacement Cattle (40% Stock Cows, 20% Bred Cows, 40% Cow-Calf Pairs). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 44%.
