Compared to last week, steers and heifers traded mostly steady to 3.00 higher. Supply and demand moderate. Cash bids for corn have hit the 8.00 mark, but trade was active and buyers continued to push bids for cattle on their list. Friday's Cattle on Feed report showed cattle on feed at 12.105 million head on April 1. This is 1.7 percent above last year and the highest April 1 inventory since 1996, when the series began. Steers totaled 7.54 million, up 2 percent, and heifers totaled 4.57 million head, up 2 percent from a year ago. Placements totaled 1.99 million head, 0.4 percent below a year ago, however higher than the average industry guess at 92.3 percent. Marketings totaled 2 million head, 2 percent less than a year ago. Estimated livestock slaughter, as of Friday's report, totaled 665,000 head, with the year to date at 10,349,000, slightly ahead of last year's pace at this time. In feedlot trade, live sales were reported from 140.00 to 146.00, a few up to 148.00 and dressed at 230.00 to 233.00, as of Friday, totaling 108,464 head. Planting is underway, as farmers have tried to get fieldwork done between rain showers. There are a few dry days in the forecast, with rain expected again at the end of the week. As of last week's report, 4 percent of Missouri's corn has been planted, 9 percent below last year's pace and 8 percent below the five year average. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 4842 head with a weighted average weight of 530.56 lbs and a price value of 187.71, 0.31 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is currently 25.41.
Supply included: 78% Feeder Cattle (49% Steers, 0% Dairy Steers, 47% Heifers, 4% Bulls); 18% Slaughter Cattle (1% Steers, 0% Heifers, 89% Cows, 9% Bulls); 4% Replacement Cattle (22% Stock Cows, 38% Bred Cows, 2% Bred Heifers, 22% Cow-Calf Pairs, 15% Heifer Pairs, 0% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 40%.
