Market Notes
Compared to last week, steers and heifers uneven from 3.00 lower to 3.00 higher, depending on type and kind. Short weaned calves and anything carrying extra flesh saw some discounts. Supply was moderate and demand was moderate. Pastures have greened up nicely, just in time to turn out cattle. However, with the latest moisture, some parts of the state are dealing with mud. The drought monitor for Missouri is still free of any drought measure, as of last Thursday's publication. Futures markets gained some ground this week, with live cattle closing 1.57 to 2.85 higher and feeder cattle contracts 0.55 to 2.40 higher. Boxed beef cuts jumped around this week, but closed on Friday at 272.62 for choice and 258.90 for select, 2.15 higher and 1.43 lower than a week ago, respectively. Choice cuts have begun a seasonal steady climb since April has arrived. Grilling season is about upon us and demand will be increasing. As of Friday afternoon, negotiated feedlot sales for the week was at 96,553 head. Reported live sales were from 139.00 to 143.00 and dressed at 226.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 5110 head with a weighted average weight of 528.19 lbs and a price value of 187.40, 2.57 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is currently 27.66.
Supply included: 71% Feeder Cattle (51% Steers, 1% Dairy Steers, 44% Heifers, 4% Bulls); 15% Slaughter Cattle (1% Steers, 0% Heifers, 88% Cows, 11% Bulls); 13% Replacement Cattle (10% Stock Cows, 46% Bred Cows, 5% Bred Heifers, 21% Cow-Calf Pairs, 16% Heifer Pairs, 2% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 37%.
