Market Notes
Compared to last week, calves under 650 lbs. sold 6.00 to 12.00 lower, over 650 lbs. sold steady to mostly 5.00 lower. A fairly rough week at the auction barns as the volatility and uncertainty that has been such a factor in other market segments finally made its way to the livestock markets. For the most part over the last few weeks buyers had been buying grazing cattle seemingly with little care to all the things going on outside the auction barn, hoping that there was enough time before fall that these summer grazers would still be profitable. Diesel fuel approaching or even passing the 5.00 mark in many areas of the state this past week seemed to be the final straw on top of a long list of other factors going on and made the markets take a step back to reevaluate current price levels. Feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon were just under 83K head and sold at lower price levels. Live sales were reported mostly from 138.00-140.00 and dressed sales 219.00-222.00. Boxed beef cutouts might have finally found the bottom and are perhaps looking to make a change in direction as spring and grilling season approaches. Choice closed on Friday at 254.71, up 0.38 and select at 249.11, up 0.70 compared to the previous week. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 6392 head with a weighted average weight of 540.22 lbs. and a price value of 186.82, 7.20 lower than the previous week.
Supply included: 86% Feeder Cattle (55% Steers, 1% Dairy Steers, 40% Heifers, 4% Bulls); 10% Slaughter Cattle (2% Steers, 1% Heifers, 82% Cows, 14% Bulls); 4% Replacement Cattle (25% Stock Cows, 45% Bred Cows, 11% Bred Heifers, 18% Cow-Calf Pairs, 1% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 47%.
