Market Notes
Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold unevenly steady, with spots of 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher. The supply of feeders was light with several barns remaining dark in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Demand for feeders was moderate, although the past week was hot and dry here buyers know the temperature swings of fall are coming and health risk is a major concern and will increase until after frost and weather stabilizes. Live and feeder cattle futures lost several dollars this week. Corn and bean futures were a few cents lower. Corn harvest has just started in the state with a few combines taking to the fields now. Boxed beef cutouts have been lower nearly every day this month as they retreat from the highs in mid to late August. Choice closed the week at 327.22, down 9.20 and select at 293.37, down 10.76 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales for the week totaled just at 70K head according to the report on Friday afternoon. Live sales fell mostly from 123.00-127.00 and dressed sales were reported mostly at 198.00-203.00. Today’s Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 2049 head with a weighted average weight of 551.32 lbs. and a price value of 168.86, 2.92 lower than last week.
Supply included: 85% Feeder Cattle (49% Steers, 1% Dairy Steers, 45% Heifers, 4% Bulls); 12% Slaughter Cattle (2% Steers, 1% Heifers, 85% Cows, 12% Bulls); 3% Replacement Cattle (20% Stock Cows, 63% Bred Cows, 3% Bred Heifers, 12% Cow-Calf Pairs, 2% Bulls).
