Market Notes

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold mostly steady to 5.00 higher with most of the advancement on markets that lost a bit of ground last week The supply was light to moderate with calves making up most of the offering once again this week. This will remain the case for a while longer until we have a couple of weeks around late June or early July when several guys will bring some yearlings they have held back to town. Farmers continue to be pretty bearish on the feeder markets, although grain prices declined sharply this week, the up and down volatility over the last few months means it will take a bit more than one week of lower grains to really believe it going to stay. Feedlot trade did manage to find a touch of footing and trade steady to slightly higher. Lives sales were reported mostly from 119.00-121.00 and dressed sales at 191.00. Boxed beef cutouts continue to soar. As of Friday afternoon choice closed at 316.94, up 11.06 and select closed at 293.19, up 2.92 compared to the previous week. The latest profit tracker showed feedlot margins at 87.00 while packer margins were reported at 929.00 per head. This report runs a week behind however and given the increase in cutout values and steady to only slightly higher cost of cattle, packer margins should be sharply higher than previous value. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 4339 head with a weighted average of 542.76 lbs. and a price value of 157.33, 1.54 lower than last week
