Market Notes
Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold mostly steady to 5.00 lower, although there were a few instances of some calves near 500 lbs. selling steady to 3.00 higher. The supply of feeders was light to moderate with most of the offering being calves. Demand was moderate. Several farmers got some more planting done although they did have to work around some rains and most planting was put on hold by the end of the weekend as rains fell over most all of the state. Over all the week was another week of disappointment for the cow calf farmer. Corn prices just keep climbing and reached the $8.00 mark at a few elevators late week. Mid-week saw June Live Cattle contract closing lower than the June Lean Hog contract on the CME. Although one is based on a live price and the other is based on carcass value, this is highly unusual and best I could find hasn’t happen for near 21 years. Boxed beef cutouts seem to have no top, on Friday choice closed at 305.88, up 9.38 and select closed at 290.27, up 7.22 compared to the previous week. This has pushed packer margins well over the $700.00 per head mark. Feedlot sales totaled near 83K head of negotiated sales as of the final report Friday and were lower once again. Live sales for the week fell mostly from 117.50-119.00 and dressed sales from 187.00-190.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 4573 head with a weighted average weight of 540.09 lbs. and a price value of 158.87, 0.64 lower than last week.
Supply included: 76% Feeder Cattle (52% Steers, 0% Dairy Steers, 42% Heifers, 5% Bulls); 13% Slaughter Cattle (1% Steers, 0% Heifers, 88% Cows, 11% Bulls); 12% Replacement Cattle (16% Stock Cows, 39% Bred Cows, 4% Bred Heifers, 28% Cow-Calf Pairs, 12% Heifer Pairs, 1% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 41%.
