Market Notes

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to mostly 5.00 lower, with instances of 5.00-10.00 lower scattered throughout auctions. The supply of feeders was moderate with each week seeing more new crop calves, as the long time hard yearlings have pretty much all made it through the market at this point. Demand is moderate, just at much lower price levels. The continuing climb of the grain markets has been weighing on the feeders. Actual cash bids for corn this week getting really close to the 7.00 mark. Planting did get back underway over the last few days and farmers are eager to get this year ’s crop in the ground, as May is just around the corner. Friday ’s cattle on feed report should be viewed as bullish. On feed and placements were both lower than average estimates and marketings were a tiny touch higher. Boxed beef cutouts were higher once again this week, choice closed on Friday at 283.77, up 7.72 and select at 272.13, up 3.03 compared to last Friday. If one ignores the month of May a year ago when Covid was majorly affecting the industry, boxed beef values would be at a record high. Feedlot trade left many scratching their heads this week as sales were lower. Live sales were reported mostly 118.00-122.00 with a few early week in Neb. up to 124.00, dressed sales were reported at 192.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 5911 head with a weighted average weight of 531.77 lbs. and a price value of 164.76, 4.76 lower than last week.
