Market Notes
Compared to last week weaned fall calves and yearling feeders mostly coming off summer grass sold sharply higher than last week. Demand was very good for all offerings on hand at area livestock markets. Nebraska sales have not recorded prices like this week since the historic high prices of 2014-2015. (The last time yearling steers averaged 190.00 was in November of 2015.) With the flip of the calendar into July, BBQ sale season has arrived! Usually, these special anniversary sales bring large crowd of buyers and top-quality cattle to the ring. Corn is on the brink of tasseling in several areas of the state. Tonnage on native grass and some alfalfa fields is a lighter than last year across the Cornhusker state. Light to moderate rains across most of the state has helped green up summer grass, shut center pivots off for a few days, will add some growth to dry land field of hay. On the flip side a heat index has been in play with temps in the 90-100's with high humidity.
Supply included: 74% Feeder Cattle (77% Steers, 22% Heifers, 1% Bulls); 14% Slaughter Cattle (100% Cows); 11% Replacement Cattle (100% Bred Cows). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 92%.
