Market Notes

Compared to last week, feeder steers under 700 lbs sold 6.00 to 8.00 higher; over 700 lbs sold steady to 1.00 higher. Feeder heifers overall sold steady to 5.00 higher. Slaughter cows sold uneven; breaker 8.00 to 10.00 higher, boner and lean 1.00 to 4.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold steady. Demand overall was good. Fed slaughter steers and heifers in the feedyards sold steady at 155.00. In the hay market, demand remained good, prices remained steady, and trade activity was moderate. Seems as though the hay market is currently in kind of a holding pattern, after the frenzy between August to December. There still is some alfalfa out there to buy but it is pretty hit or miss, and several folks are looking to purchase grass hay, to help get them through. A winter storm system moved across the state last week bringing much needed rain and snow to many.

Supply included: 92% Feeder Cattle (53% Steers, 45% Heifers, 2% Bulls); 8% Slaughter Cattle (97% Cows, 3% Bulls); 1% Replacement Cattle (54% Stock Cows, 3% Bred Cows, 43% Bred Heifers). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 78%.
