Market Notes
Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-600 lbs sold 10.00-15.00 lower, with a light test of 600-650 lbs selling mostly steady to spots 5.00 lower, a nice offering of feeders over 650 lbs were not well tested with last week on comparable weights or sales but sold with a lower undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold 10.00-20.00 lower, 500-600 lbs sold 15.00-20.00 lower, spots 25.00 lower and a light test of 600-650 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good with supply moderate. Prices for feeder heifers weighing 400-600 lbs after several weeks of having a very active market and high lofty prices feel back to earth on Monday after getting top heavy from out of state interest. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady with spots 3.00 lower on the high dressing cows. CME Cattle Futures surprisingly traded higher on Monday with triple digit gains and nearby corn traded lower but the grain markets huge up swing higher last week is what the market is looking at. The conflict in Ukraine has set the stage for fast rising commodity prices and also stressing global supply chains will keep commodity prices volatile and pressure on cattle markets.
Supply included: 92% Feeder Cattle (66% Steers, 30% Heifers, 4% Bulls); 8% Slaughter Cattle (73% Cows, 27% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 44%.
