Market Notes
Compared to last week, feeders under 600 lbs. sold uneven from 3.00 lower to 3.00 higher, feeders over 600 lbs. sold steady to 3.00 lower. There was several spots of calves just on either side of the 500 lb. mark that sold sharply higher. Overall markets did seem to take a bit of a breath. A much different kind of week this week with nowhere close to the amount of big drafts and pot loads, especially on the heavier weight cattle. Some reporters even committed it had been a long time since they had seen this volume of run with so many small lots and odds and ends in a sale. That isn’t to say there wasn’t still reputation decent sized lots offered, and they still bring premiums, but it wasn’t a full day of watching ring full after ring full regardless of what location you were at. Winter weather also came back into the picture late week as snow spread across the state. Most reports were 2-4 inches but there was many scattered pockets of up to 8 inches around. Boxed beef cutouts climbed higher this week. Choice closed on Friday at 284.31, up 12.49 and select closed at 273.97, up 12.87 compared to the previous week. Feedlot volume was lackluster with just under 60K head reported as of the Friday afternoon report. Live sales were mostly in the 135.00-138.00 range and dressed sales were almost entirely at 218.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 11,221 head with a weighted average weight of 556.05 and a price value of 178.99, 1.45 lower than last week.
Supply included: 89% Feeder Cattle (56% Steers, 0% Dairy Steers, 41% Heifers, 3% Bulls); 8% Slaughter Cattle (3% Steers, 2% Heifers, 88% Cows, 8% Bulls); 3% Replacement Cattle (11% Stock Cows, 53% Bred Cows, 27% Bred Heifers, 7% Cow-Calf Pairs, 1% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 49%.
