Market Notes
Compared to last week, feeder steers sold steady to 3.00 lower and heifers sold steady to 3.00 higher. Markets were very mixed around the state this week and there was some spots that didn’t fit the overall trend. The supply of feeders was moderate although summer heat is creeping into the picture and starting to affect marketing and transportation. One stick out sale this week was a single draft of 354 head of heifers at the Windsor Livestock Auction, all black hided yearling weighting 732 lbs. that sold for 150.35. Late afternoon on Friday the monthly Cattle on Feed report and the semi-annual cattle inventory were released. Both reports should be viewed as bullish. Looking at the COF report both on feed numbers and placements came in under expectations and marketings were higher. The cattle inventory also slowed lower than expected numbers both for beef cows and replacement heifers. As of Friday afternoon feedlot sales totaled about 75k head with live sales reported from 119.00-125.00 and dressed sales 195.00-200.00. The boxed beef cutouts closed the week slightly lower with Choice at 266.93, down 1.31 and Select at 249.94, down 1.85 compared to the previous week. Grain markets are were also lower with corn down almost a dime and beans down just over fifty cents for the week. The Missouri stocker formula consists of 4897 head with a weighted average weight of 556.84 and a price value of 170.62, down 0.38 from last week.
Supply included: 88% Feeder Cattle (54% Steers, 0% Dairy Steers, 43% Heifers, 3% Bulls); 9% Slaughter Cattle (4% Steers, 2% Heifers, 80% Cows, 14% Bulls); 3% Replacement Cattle (14% Stock Cows, 40% Bred Cows, 10% Bred Heifers, 32% Cow-Calf Pairs, 4% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 55%.
