Market Notes
Compared to last week, feeders sold uneven with most of the mid-weight cattle selling within 2.00 on either side of even. Markets were highly affected by weather this week with many barns all out cancelling and those that had sales had very light offerings. The coldest weather of the year so far quickly froze up mud and about everything else. Snow, wind and record setting temperatures over the weekend made caring for livestock a difficult job. According to weather service this is the longest continuous cold streak of weather since 1983 and on track to flirt with the record set in 1936. Many sales have already cancelled into this week as well, due to poor travel conditions and dangerous wind chills. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed for the week, choice closed at 232.37, down 2.21 and select 220.93, up 0.14 from the previous week. Feedlots sales as of the last report on Friday afternoon showed negotiated volume right at 73K head and its possible some took place after hours as well. Live sales were reported mostly 113.00-115.00 and dressed sales mostly at 180.00 although some higher late sales will likely pull the average just over 180.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 2015 head, again highly affected by weather, with a weighted average weight of 551.93 and a price value of 155.81, down 1.35 from the previous week.
Supply included: 92% Feeder Cattle (55% Steers, 43% Heifers, 3% Bulls); 6% Slaughter Cattle (3% Steers, 2% Heifers, 85% Cows, 10% Bulls); 2% Replacement Cattle (25% Stock Cows, 47% Bred Cows, 5% Bred Heifers, 19% Cow-Calf Pairs, 4% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 57%.
