Market Notes
Compared to last week, feeder steers under 500 lbs sold 3.00 higher; 500 to 700 lbs 8.00 to 10.00 higher; over 700 lbs steady to 2.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 700 lbs sold 5.00 to 9.00 higher; over 700 lbs uneven, 1.00 lower to 1.00 higher. Slaughter cows sold 3.00 to 6.00 lower. Slaughter bulls sold 11.00 to 12.00 lower. Demand overall was good. Compared to last week, fed slaughter steers and heifers in the feedyards sold 2.00 higher at 142.00. Compared to the last report, the hay market has risen significantly, but it should be no surprise to anyone, that prices continue to rise for all hay and forage types due to the worsening drought and shorter yields. Prices change so fast it is hard to keep up with the changes and they are all over the map, making it difficult to zero in on the true average. With that being said, demand remains high for all types of hay, which is increasingly difficult to find.
Supply included: 90% Feeder Cattle (62% Steers, 38% Heifers, 1% Bulls); 10% Slaughter Cattle (93% Cows, 7% Bulls); 0% Replacement Cattle (100% Bred Heifers). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 78%.
