Market Notes

Compared to last week, steer calves under 600 lbs sold steady to firm and a much larger offering of 600-700 lb steer calves sold 5.00 to spots up to 10.00 higher with some really high quality weaned cattle offered in that weight range. Heifers sold mostly steady except for a few fancy lots of heifer calves that weighed 450-525 lbs trading with a higher undertone. Demand was good to very good for a moderate supply. Cattle futures had an up day Thursday which didn't hurt and along with the quality cattle and the colder, more favorable weather to handle the calves it made for an active market. Slaughter cows and bulls sold uneven from steady to 2.00 lower on the more average dressing cattle to 2.00 higher on some of the fleshier or higher dressing cows.

Supply included: 87% Feeder Cattle (42% Steers, 52% Heifers, 6% Bulls); 10% Slaughter Cattle (96% Cows, 4% Bulls); 3% Replacement Cattle (60% Stock Cows, 12% Bred Cows, 28% Cow-Calf Pairs). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 32%.
