Market Notes
Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 600 lbs 3.00 to 6.00 higher, 600-850 lbs steady to 2.00 lower, over 850 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 550 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher, 550-700 lbs 3.00 to 6.00 higher, over 700 lbs mostly steady. Very good demand for light steers and heifers that can be backgrounded, only moderate demand for those heavier cattle bound for finishing yards. Auction receipts were very large again this week as feeder cattle producers send their calves to town as the weather has made many challenges for them. Cattle feeders have had much adversity thrown at them with the weather as well and are not willing, nor need to chase the market as so many of this class of cattle are currently available. The weather has moderated allowing producers to get dug out but feed efficiency has been, and will continue to be affected making for higher costs of gain for feedyard cattle. Very large auction receipts expected again next week as producers continue their winter marketings. Slaughter cows 1.00 to 3.00 higher, bulls too few offered to fully test.
Supply included: 93% Feeder Cattle (57% Steers, 43% Heifers, 1% Bulls); 7% Slaughter Cattle (44% Steers, 4% Dairy Steers, 30% Heifers, 21% Cows, 1% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 69%.
