Market Notes
Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 1000 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher, over 1000 lbs mostly steady. Feeder heifers under 700 lbs 15.00 to 20.00 higher, over 700 lbs steady to 5.00 higher. Very good demand for all weights of steers and heifers as cattle feeders are feeling very bullish about the cash fat market in the 4th quarter of the year. The current cash fat market in the north has greatly outperformed the southern plains and the futures contracts, by about 13.00, which has built a lot of optimism into the minds of cattle producers. The Feeder Cattle futures continue to stairstep their way higher, reaching back up again to 180.00 for Nov, giving cattle feeders a signal that now is the time to buy. Drought conditions still remain in West River, SD causing some localized early selling off grass. The corn crop in the eastern half of the state looks good as rains came this week, bringing needed moisture, some areas did see storm damage and lodging and even some green snap of corn, but overall the outlook for a bountiful harvest looks good. Slaughter cows unevenly steady, bulls 2.00 lower.
Supply included: 85% Feeder Cattle (65% Steers, 1% Dairy Steers, 34% Heifers); 15% Slaughter Cattle (43% Steers, 2% Dairy Steers, 35% Heifers, 18% Cows, 2% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 97%.
