South Dakota Weekly Cattle Auction Summary

Archived Report

4/16/2022

Total Run: 9,519

Market Notes

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 850 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 lower, over 850 lbs 1.00 to 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers unevenly steady. Moderate to good demand for this lighter offering of feeder cattle. With the winter storm at midweek there were some cancellations, along with the locations that don't host a sale this holiday week, there were fewer feeder cattle offered in the auctions. With the rising corn cost there is great concern over the coming months in the fed cattle market, this is adding pressure to the feeder cattle market. There was some moisture received this week but more is needed, which is keeping some pressure on the light cattle market that could run on grass as yearlings. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher, bulls 2.00 to 3.00 higher.

Supply included: 91% Feeder Cattle (54% Steers, 46% Heifers, 0% Bulls); 9% Slaughter Cattle (52% Steers, 3% Dairy Steers, 13% Heifers, 29% Cows, 3% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 94%.
