Market Notes

Compared to last week: Feeder steers 2.00 to 5.00 higher, except steers under 600 lbs not well compared. Feeder heifers steady to 2.00 higher. Moderate to good demand for feeder cattle this week. The volatility in the futures contracts continues but this week the negative tone changed into a more positive one as Live and Feeder Cattle futures gained 3.00 to 4.00. Corn futures lost .20 but still remain in the mid 7.00 range. Cattle feeders sold fat cattle this week at 140.00-142.00 in Iowa but many had expected a month ago that the current market would be over 150.00. As costs of gain are so high cattle feeders are very cognizant of cattle carrying too much flesh. The market is most active for light weight cattle to go to grass with, as this supply gets tighter with each passing week. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher, bulls steady.

Supply included: 94% Feeder Cattle (64% Steers, 36% Heifers); 6% Slaughter Cattle (42% Steers, 5% Dairy Steers, 29% Heifers, 23% Cows, 2% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 93%.
