South Dakota Weekly Cattle Auction Summary

Archived Report

Total Run: 7,579

Market Notes

Compared to last week: Only 1 reported auction this week, no price comparisons to be made. Very good demand was seen for all weights of steers and heifers after the Christmas break. Cattle feeders are feeling very bullish on the future months of the fat cattle market and are eager to get feeder cattle bought. The weather has been cold, but dry, helping to keep cattle clean and feedyard pens in good shape, and cattle are growing and gaining well. Feeder cattle producers are ready to capitalize on the strength of the market and are getting their cattle consigned to sell as all auction locations resume their regular sale schedules and are expecting large receipts. Below zero weather will return at midweek but no snow in the forecast. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher, bulls 2.00 to 3.00 lower.

Supply included: 89% Feeder Cattle (63% Steers, 37% Heifers, 0% Bulls); 11% Slaughter Cattle (54% Steers, 4% Dairy Steers, 13% Heifers, 28% Cows, 2% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 91%.
