Market Notes
Compared to last week: A much larger offering this week, feeder steers and heifers 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Very good demand for yearling steers and heifers, the market was very active as cattle feeders are feeling fairly optimistic about the fed cattle market. Cash fat cattle sales in the north remained at 126.00, again selling at a good premium to the southern plains. The basis to the CME Live Cattle futures is almost 7.00 over the board, this fact is really lending support to the feeder cattle market. Old crop corn futures have fallen back to below 6.50 and new crop at 5.20 is helping to ease concern that prices could move higher yet. There has been some rain across the state but more will be needed to prevent cattle from having to be pulled off grass early. Producers in the central part of the state have had it the worst and continue to sell cattle to meet their available forage supplies. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 higher, bulls 3.00 higher.
Supply included: 92% Feeder Cattle (49% Steers, 50% Heifers, 0% Bulls); 8% Slaughter Cattle (45% Steers, 3% Dairy Steers, 13% Heifers, 38% Cows, 2% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 94%.
