Market Notes

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 900 lbs 4.00 to 8.00 higher, over 900 lbs steady to 1.00 higher except 950-1000 lbs 3.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 750 lbs 2.00 to 6.00 higher, over 750 lbs steady to 1.00 higher. Very good demand for all weights and classes, however the best demand is centered on cattle that will finish in the 4th quarter of this year and the 1st quarter of next year. Lots of yearlings offered this week, the market was most active on those that came off grass from drought regions as the flesh is very light and attractive. The ongoing drought is forcing cattle producers in those worst affected regions to sell yearlings early. The cash fed cattle market remains stuck at 120.00 while boxed beef prices are at 338.00 for Choice boxes. Consumer demand for beef, both domestically and internationally is very high, as the price of beef is very high in comparison to the other proteins, this was exacerbated again this week with the JBS computer hack that saw cattle slaughter drop by a quarter on Tuesday. Packers are firm in their resolve to keep their large margins in place while they suck all of the profit out of the industry. Yet cattle feeders are eternal optimists and are enticed to buy some green yearlings that will fit the Dec Live Cattle board as it sat at 129.00 on Friday. Corn prices are worrisome as costs of gain are sitting above the price of the cattle. Slaughter cows and bulls steady to 1.00 higher.

Supply included: 96% Feeder Cattle (58% Steers, 42% Heifers, 0% Dairy Heifers); 4% Slaughter Cattle (21% Steers, 3% Dairy Steers, 33% Heifers, 41% Cows, 2% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 85%.
