Weighted Average Auction report of Canton, North Wilkesboro, Norwood, Siler City, 
Smithfield and Turnersburg for the Week Ending Thursday Aug 20, 2015

Cattle Receipts:  4142        Last week:  4708              Last Year:  4893

Compared to last week, demand, market activity and offerings were moderate. Quality 
was plain to average. Due to dry pasture conditions, farmers are feeding hay that 
would have been needed for this winter. There has been little to no rainfall in most 
areas for weeks. Many farmers will not get a third cutting on their hay fields, which 
could lead to a possible hay shortage this winter. Some farmers are seeking hay from 
other counties and even other states to try and meet their needs.

Slaughter cows made up 14 percent of the offering, slaughter bulls 3 percent, 
replacement cows 4 percent, other cows 2 percent, and feeders 77 percent.  The feeder 
supply included 35 percent steers, 39 percent heifers, and 26 percent bulls. Near 17 
percent of the run weighed over 600 lbs.
