After a long time hiatus it's back...

  1. Ranchers.net  50.1%
  2. Steerplanet  23.7%
  3. Cattle-Today  19.7%
  4. Advantage Cattle Services  4.0%
  5. 5BarX  1.4%
  6. Clubcalves  0.6%
  7. Breedersworld  0.3%
  8. EDJE  0.0%

This is the first month that Showsteers is not on the list after they dropped their forum.

Steerplanet has made it back into the top two for the first time since Ranchers.net was added to the index.

Cattle Today's forum is down in traffic significantly from this time last year while Steerplanet is up which is what caused the flip flop.  Breedersworld and EDJE also reached new lows in activity.

End of Texas Steer Season

We’re just about completely done with the fall born steer buying season here in Texas.  If you aren't familiar with Texas steer shows, validation is coming up in a few weeks and if a calf hasn't sold as a show steer by then, it's a feeder.

As far as I’m concerned, we did okay this year (considering the ‘terminal mating heifer calf disease’ we had) selling 9 steers.  The rest are bringing a very solid $650/head through the auction barn and we have more rye grass than we know what to do with right now.  In fact, it’s pretty hard to complain about anything but too darn many Heat Wave heifer calves.

So how did the guy who does everything he possibly can online sell calves this year?

Yeah.  One darn calf sold via the web.  In fact, as if to spit in my face on PPC advertising, we got a much higher ROI from Miller Lite than we did from Adwords.

As far as leads go, the web was a gold mine but you don’t need me to tell you there’s a fairly large gap between typing an e-mail or picking up a phone and showing up to see a calf.

NOTE:I've gotten a few questions about the visitor share report and why it hasn't posted yet.  That's due entirely to the fact that Compete.com hasn't updated their stats yet.  As soon as they do, we'll have the update.

Would you pay $100/straw for semen out of this bull?

No?  How about $200?  $300 perhaps?  Well, it doesn't matter, nobody will sell it for that price.  That's the original catalog picture of CF Trump, one of the most influential Shorthorn bulls ever.

Impact of TH on calves

I'm pretty sure I only asked him to talk about this subject to piss off the TH zealots.

Evaluating Soundess in Prospect Calves

Kit Pharo's Upset Again

The man who made his name telling the entire beef industry they don't know how to raise cattle is once again upset over "Pharo Bashing" in his most recent newsletter.

This happens about once a year or so when people who aren't on his e-mail list watch his sales on RFD and wonder if they woke up in the Twilight Zone.  The conversation typically goes something like my dad calling and saying "JEFF, turn on RFD, you won't believe what these bulls look like and what they are selling for" to which I reply "oh, time flies, I forgot the Pharo sale was today".

It's always good for a bit of a laugh when he includes this in his newsletter because of the lack of self awareness it requires.  The best part had to be this quote...

Great minds discuss ideas.
Average minds discuss events.
Small minds discuss other people.

What was funny about it?  He spent the previous three paragraphs calling people "afraid of change", "filled with hatred and anger", "jealous", and "filled with envy".

To be clear, I really have nothing against the man, I've actually helped them spot a domain name issue one time when their webmaster got lazy and didn't have it on auto-renew.  You haven't seen me bash Kit's philosophies on here because they do make quite a bit of sense in the right environment.  I'll say that I know a lot of people that are "low input" and they'll laugh at you if you said a $5,000 bull was low input.

What doesn't make sense is for somebody who has made a name for himself criticising everything other than what he does to have such an amazingly thin skin.
