Fakeford
The term Fakeford is a term used by some to describe Hereford marked cattle that are not actually Herefords.
In Texas, with the visual classification system, Fakefords have become popular for the production of show steers. You can find the guidelines for classification of Hereford steers in this document put out by the AgriLIFE Extension System.
More often than not, the steers that win Hereford breed classes at the Texas major shows where a visual classification system is used are Fakefords.
The term Fakeford is not derogatory. In most breeds, the equivalent of a Fakeford is actually a purebred. It’s only the fact that Hereford breeders haven’t jumped on the crossbred bandwagon that there’s even a need for such a term.
