Who doesn't raise show steers?

MONDAY, MARCH 28, 2011

Raising show steers is a great industry to be going into right now if you are a big fan of increasingly oversupplied industries with stable to shrinking demand.

Just looking at the March issue of the Showbox...

That's 1,265 steers and it doesn't count the dozen or so sales that don't list the amount of calves they're selling.

It doesn't count the numerous people on that list that sell large amounts of other calves.

It doesn't count the calves moved by guys like Bonham who are able to move a couple hundred in a year.

And it's only the people who have ads in the Showbox.

Photo Friday - March 25th (8 Pics)

FRIDAY, MARCH 25, 2011

I'm trying to refrain from using too many of the great calf pics everyone's posting.

The clubby guys that were at the place earlier in the day wouldn't even get in the pen with this ole girl.  I actually took this picture thinking it might make a great photo at his upcoming funeral.

I scrape this pics from various blogs that let us but if you have pictures you'd like us to include, send them to jeff@cattle.com.

Wade Rodgers Blog Added

FRIDAY, MARCH 25, 2011

Wade Rodgers' blog has been added to the blog roll.

This bring the grand total to five people in the entire world that we do not do a blog listing for.

La Nina

THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2011

Sometimes those weather boys do know what they're talking about.  The current drought map is pretty much exactly what they predicted last fall when analyzing the La Nina weather pattern...

Sale Calendar

THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2011

For the record...

BWOS keeps falling off of the online sale calendar list because of differences in their HTML on the schedule from one week to the next, not because I don't want them there.  I put everything I can program a spider to find on that list.

Get off My Lawn

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23, 2011

Yes, I’m getting closer and closer to middle aged every day and things do start to go.  The ability to drink tequila was actually the first thing to go and that was in my early 20s.  I’m pretty sure my ability to eat spicy food and not writhe in agony the rest of the night has been fading away for the past few months.

Is the ability to endure a session of looking at “loud” magazine ads something that goes with time as well?

It’s taken me three or four attempts to get through this month’s issue of the Showbox.  Don’t get me wrong, each of the ads is a great piece of work in their own right.  If I saw any of them as fliers or just looked one of them up I’d be impressed with the professionalism of the work.

There are so many skilled designers who are all great at catching your attention.  When I look at their work in order, one after another, after another, trying to locate the cattle, sale dates, locations, etc. it feels like I'm at a rave.

Have I become my grandma, sitting at the kitchen table griping at those crazy designers to turn the ads down as they zoom down FM 478

So far, it's only 277 vs the 648 for the fall sales but all of those prices are increases over the mid-western fall sales.

One thing I've noticed in the few sales I've attended, and it's no surprise after looking at the major show breed counts the past two years, people are flat out scared of Charolais steers.

San Antonio Steer Sale Prices

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 16, 2011

I get on the San Antonio steer show pretty hard but they did great with the sale this year.  After add ons, they maintained an impressive minimum of $4,000/head for the 219 steers that went through the sale this year.

Color at Slick Shows

TUESDAY, MARCH 15, 2011

So in December of 2009 I did a small study that showed 33 of 36 champion and reserve champion steers in Houston in 08/09 were colored cattle.  It was not surprise to anybody who watches slick shows that colored calves dominated.

So how has that trend held up since then?

Based on Showchampions pictures for ABC, AOB, Brahman, Chianina, Limousin, Maine, Gert, Simbrah, and Simmental breeds at San Antonio and Houston in 2010 and 2011.

Slight blaze/star faced black cattle were counted as black (only impacted 3-4).  Complete baldies were counted as colored.

Numerous breeds don't add up to eight because I couldn't find a picture of them on Showchampions.

“Awww Dad, thanks so much, we really appreciate you.”
-Our twins 20 years from now, I’m sure of it.

I registered the domain names JackSchroeder.com and TessaSchroeder.com.  I have Godaddy up on my cell phone whenever conversations about names come up.

2nd Place HW Simbrah

This calf was quite literally pulled from the loading chute last May when we were sending the last of the commercial steers to the auction barn.  He hadn’t even made it into the show steer pen and we have no clue which cow he’s from (unless I need to sell another Simbrah looking calf, then it will be whichever one that calf is from).  He’s out of the Maine bull we plan on sending to the packer in a few weeks.  That picture is the first time my brother had ever seen him.  He was just weaned in bulk with the other commercial calves and the gentleman to the right, who wasn’t even there to buy a show steer that day, bought him for not much over feeder price for his grandson.

Judging Committees

My little pipe dream is a two judge panel at majors.  That or perhaps the major show steer judges could all get together and actually come up with a decision on what a good calf is.  I don't care if they decide that pink polka dots and long horns are what make great show steers, just pick something you big shots can agree on and make sure everyone knows what that is.

~45lb 9yo Girl Stops 1,300lb Brahman Steer

FRIDAY, MARCH 11, 2011

It’s not a matter of if, but when, a calf will get away from a kid during the Brahman cross classes at Houston/San Antonio. Typically it requires a ring man cornering the calf to get it back under control and it rightfully flusters a kid up pretty well. This little girl wasn’t going to have any of that foolishness when he first show steer, Snowball, got away from her…

Jeff's Favorite Things

TUESDAY, MARCH 08, 2011

If I were buying steers from the 150 or so I’ve taped this year, here are a few calves I’d watch people who have much more money than myself buy…

American - Grothues Ranch #8

This socked baldy might be difficult to run anything but straight ABC but he’d certainly play as a straight ABC.  He’s got quality to spare and he’s so calm we used him to calm down some of the other calves that day.

Sells March 19th in a private treaty phone bid off.

Black Exotic - Skinner Cattle Company #3

A powerful black calf that will most certainly slick.

Sells March 20th on Breedersworldonlinesales

Breed Steer – Red Angus - Skinner Cattle Company #20

Yes, playing the Red Angus game is 80% “will it class” but in this case if you don’t class it’s because the classifiers are being jerks.  This purebred Red Angus is just a darn good breed steer.

http://www.cattle.com/auctions/indi_video.aspx?id=329

Sells March 20th on Breedersworldonlinesales

Charolais – Mazurkiewicz #5

I’m still a sucker for power and this boy has it in spades.  I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a Tyson calf that looks like this.

http://www.cattle.com/auctions/lot_view.aspx?id=287

Sells March 19th at the ranch (pre-bidding here on Cattle.com will be available tomorrow)

All of those calves sell the same weekend which reminds me, if you have sale information you would like for us to put in our sale system, I welcome you to send it to us.

No charge at all…as long as your sale is after the 19th.  Just contact me at 210-380-7459 or jeff@cattle.com

Lack of Posts

I caught a nasty cold sometime last Friday or so and spending last Saturday in dusty pens doomed me.

“Farmer Update”

If you pay passing attention to SEO, you might have heard of something called the “famer update.”  It’s a pretty darn big deal for some sites but it’s in reference to content farms, not the kind you do.  Content farms are sites that generate generally poor quality content in hopes of ranking better with search engines.  If you ARE interested in finding out more about it, go read this post at SEOMoz or just Google the term “farmer update.”

I will say that if anybody tries to claim they’re an SEO expert to you, ask them what they know about the farmer update.  If they don’t know what you are talking about don’t waste your time with them.

Lache Seastrunk

I really don’t pay an extreme amount of attention to recruiting (an entire industry built around charging people for gossip about high school boys just doesn’t sit well with me for some reason) but anybody who does saw that coming from a mile away.  There’s a reason the Big XII powers backed off that guy like the plague despite setting their previous recruiting classes up for him.

LMAAuctions.com

I’ve added LMAAuctions.com to the “Online Sale Industry Visitor Report.”  They come in one spot ahead of Breedersworldonlinesales.com dropping them to #5 in the only known attempt at an objective list of the most visited sites in the online sale industry.
