CCS Test

A bunch of online sources and a few legit real world sources are saying that the folks working on a CCS test have come up with something.

There was a definite sound of relief in the voice of one gentleman I spoke with.  He said they should have announcement out on Monday that there will be a clear test available.  More importantly though, it seems that the list of 1680 descendants that are positive for the gene is not nearly as ground shaking as it could have been.

Warrant

For what it's worth, the guy who was the first person I remember with an obsession for Heat Wave 4-5 years back is now head over heals in love with Warrant.

Livecattlesales.com

If you are looking for an alternative to Liveauctions.tv or DVAuction to broadcast your sale, consider Livecattlesales.com.

Livecattlesales.com uses a bidding system built by a web developer (vortexauctions.com) for other purposes but has been ported quite well to cattle sales.  I’d say the bidder interface is the most intuitive that I’ve seen of the major online auction operations.

Some small features they had that I haevn’t seen done in other systems or not executed as well include a running list of all bids and a “My Purhcase” button.  You can see who online has bid each price as an animal is being sold as the auction goes on.  By clicking “My Purchase” you get a running list of cattle you’ve bought.

Another neat little feature is the listing on the main page of Livecattlesales.com has a running and up to the second count of how many more cattle are going to go through the ring.

My only complaint about the system is that I couldn’t watch the sale until I registered for it.  I’d like to be able to watch a sale without being setup as a bidder.

My perfect auction system…

  • Take the “My Purchase” button of Livecattlesales.com
  • Bid history of Livecattlesales.com
  • Exposure of Liveauctions.tv and DVAuction
  • Final price list of DVAuction

Angus Breeders and CCS

Evidently not everyone is happy with the American Angus Association’s recent announcement regarding curly calf syndrome.

This past Saturday I decided to take a short drive to look at the cattle that would sell in a production sale that afternoon.  While looking at the cattle I happened to overhear a conversation a somewhat large (at least he thought so) Angus breeder was having with another gentleman.  I wasn't snooping around, there was no way not to hear this guy while looking at the cattle I was looking at.

To paraphrase the two comments that stuck out, he said that the members should demand the entire board of directors resign and if a certain board member were “here right now, I would choke him”.  To put it very politely, he also had quite a bit of disbelief that "Mark" (Gardiner) has only had 11 CCS calves by now.

Personally, I thought the decisive action they are taking is impressive and shows a proactive attitude toward fixing a problem as soon as reasonably possible.  However, I’m not buying and selling $25k+ donor cows based solely on $B.

1680 Influence List

The following is a list of all 184 bulls in our AI sire database that we know have G A R Precision 1680 somewhere in their pedigree.  There are likely other bulls in the system, these are just the bulls that have him in their two generation pedigree or another son/grandson of 1680 in their two generation pedigree.

The presence of 1680 in a pedigree DOES NOT mean a bull is a curly calf syndrome carrier, it just implies the possibility of it.

TH/PHA Awareness

DO NOT assume that everyone knows the basics of TH/PHA.

Maybe it’s because I spend too much time in front of a computer but I figured there’s no way somebody who raises club calves couldn’t know the basics about TH/PHA.  However, I was at a meeting last week of a group of clubby breeders and the leader of the organization (a county extension agent) decided to do a presentation on TH/PHA because he had his first dead TH calf.

He’s been raising club calves for nearly a decade now and didn’t do much research on it until now, when he had his first dead calf from it.  He realized it because he used the Shorthorn bull of another gentleman who has raised steers just as long and didn’t know his sire is TH positive until now.

In what can only be described as a royal kick to my gut, he went to Showsteers.com, printed their list, and called it a comprehensive list of all known TH/PHA carriers (a list that doesn’t even include Heat Wave and has less than half the information publicly available).

Some more interesting comments/questions/statements…

  • “Is the packer going to start testing our cattle and not accepting them if they test positive for TH?”
  • “One in four live calves out of two carrier parents will be carriers"
  • If you breed to clean bulls for eight generations you’ll be clean.
  • “I leased bulls from Lautner that were all positive for TH.  What does that mean for my replacement heifers from those bulls?”
  • Are the breed associations going to make us kill all of our carrier cattle?

Again, these are people that raise show steers.  I’m really not trying to dog on these guys, just illustrating that there is still quite a lack of knowledge about the subject out there.  Don’t think that just because this subject has been beaten like a rented mule that everyone knows about it.

Most Active Forums

In addition to the other meaningless and useless stats that we keep track of here on Cattle.com, I'm adding a measurement of forum activity for the 'major' cattle forums.  It's based on the percentage of topics and replies on each of the forums over a specified period of time.

Based on forum activity between October 1st and October 13th...

  1. Cattle-Today : 47.76%
  2. Steerplanet : 31.86%
  3. 5BarX : 7.37%
  4. Advantage Cattle Services : 6.50%
  5. Breedersworld : 5.54%
  6. Clubcalves : 0.73%
  7. Showsteers : 0.20%

No, that's not a typo, Showsteers.com is dead last of the seven tracked.  I double and triple checked that before even thinking about posting this.  The one time king of the Internet forums for show jocks has been all but killed off by relative upstart Steerplanet.com a forum that didn't even exist two-years ago.

Heat Wave Semen - $230/straw

If you thought that $65/straw was too much to pay for the original Heat Wave when his clones were at regular prices, good luck finding some for anywhere near that price now.

Heat Wave semen topped out at $230/straw and averaged $171.97/straw on 259 straws at the Deiter Brothers Dispersal.  I was interested in some at $50/straw and tried to call in about 3-minutes before it sold, the lines were full.

I'm not one that believes there's a noticeable difference between him and his sons and considering the "ethics" of the club calf industry I doubt most of his clones sons are sold as sons of the clones.  However, there's evidently a group that has a solid belief that there is a very valuable difference.

Cattle Pregnancy Test

While doing some light patent reading on Sunday afternoon, I ran across a patent for something I'd love to get my hands on, a field pregnancy test...

This invention provides bovine pregnancy test methods and devices. The test is also suitable for other ruminant and/or ungulate animals. Antigens from Group A (early pregnancy antigens), and/or Group B (mid-pregnancy antigens), and Group C (early, mid- and late pregnancy antigens) are detected in a fluid from the animal, and pregnancy is reliably determined. The pregnancy assays of this invention are preferably carried out using immunoassay devices which provide immediate results in the field.

USPTO Description

I've never been around the process of bringing a product like that to market but it was patented in July of this year.

Last year I bought a bunch of human pregnancy tests in hopes of doing a half assed experiment with our cows to see if they would work for cattle.  One can only hope this patent is brought to market before I sit and wait for our cows to urinate while I hold a little stick behind them.

Dr. Who Semen

Despite what the auctioneer at the Deiter Brothers Dispersal said at least half a dozen times in the first hour, there is no shortage of Dr. Who semen.  I called three different suppliers and nobody had heard a thing, had plenty in stock, and it's still $25/straw.

He got me questioning it when he kept saying "this is about the only way you'll get a Dr. Who calf", "I don't think you can get that semen anywhere now", etc. every time a cow bred to Dr. Who or an embryo sired by Dr. Who came through the ring.

Camp Cooley Ranch Tri-Monthly Dispersal

Link

Camp Cooley held a "Complete Registered Brangus Herd Dispersal" back in June.  I'm glad to see that Camp Cooley has been able to build their registered female herd back up from scratch in three-months because now they are selling "all registered females" including 333 REGISTERED BRANGUS FEMALES on November 13th.

I know it's the in thing to trick people into coming to your sale by calling it a dispersal but this is just perposterous.  What's next?

"Complete and total dispersal of all cows with sale ear tags"

"Complete and total dispersal of all cows we listed in our catalog except for the ones we just included pictures of with no intention to sell and the ones that we PO from the sale"

The more I think about it, it takes some serious cojones to market your dispersal sale as heavily as they did in June and then turn around and have another dispersal sale just five-months later.  I'm not naieve, I know dispersal is about the most meaningless word in the beef industry but give me a break.

R.A. Brown Ranch Sale Report

Full Report Here

The reds and the hybrids were off a bit from last year.

The Angus bulls were up a solid $400 to just over $3,500 with no big name bull to artificially inflate the average.  Similar to Gardiner (which from what I hear was up $500/head or so) there seems to be little to no impact from 1680 on the Angus bull sales.

The pregnancy sales just continued to strengthen my view that buying and selling embryos is a the land of the crazy, or those who aren't fond of their money.  The pregnancies including recipients averaged just over $2,100.  Those pregnancies were from embryos that typically bring $800-$1,200 if they were still on ice.  The cost of 2-4YO well managed recipients is easily $800.  As the little table in the RAB catalog stated $2,100/pregnancy equated a value of about $400/embryo.

As always, potential is more valuable than reality.

R.A. Brown Sale

Don't foget to stop by DVAuction to watch the R.A. Brown sale today.

Even if you're not in the market for a bull or top of the line Red Angus female, watching to see how the Precision influenced cattle sell will be interesting to say the least.

WOW, that was fast

Those Angus guys don't fool around...

Guidelines Relating to the Registration Status of Potential and Known Carriers of the Curly Calf Syndrome

The part that is most shocking is the section describing A.I. sires.  If I'm reading it correctly, cattle out of bulls found to be CCS carriers won't be registerable if they are conceived 60-days after the bull is found to be a CCS carrier REGARDLESS of whether they're carriers.

Out of the 732 Angus bulls in our AI sire directory, 121 of them have Precision in their TWO generation pedigree.  The 3/4 generation pedigrees are even more.  If this policy were in effect 20-years ago, much of the foundation of the breed wouldn't even be registered as Angus bulls today.

Needless to say, the AAA is taking decisive action.

What's better than two ads per page?

Four ads.

Yeah, it's kind of mean to bash a site for making money but the new ownership of Breedersworld is following a pretty predictable path.  I've been looking forward to what they'd do with that site since it was sold this Spring.  When it was sold I was slightly in the market but before I could even do a day of due diligence it had sold.

For what they paid I assumed there would be some grand improvements to the site allowing more functionality or providing more information to the visitors.  They were also VERY quick on the purchase and I only assumed they had grand plans for it.  Their updates about their plans only got my anticipation up more.

Don't get me wrong, I realize how hard it is to develop a site that is useful but I really did expect more innovation than figuring out that four ads would fit in each block when the first two were sold.

Farm Loans

I'm as against socialising our financial system as the next guy but good luck finding a land loan like I'm trying to do for the first time.  Yeah, my timing can be just flat out awful sometimes.

We're buying 10 acres adjacent to my family's ranch because it's got some excellent working pens (6 1/2' tall fences, 8" corner and in line posts, 2" cross pipe), a barn, a well, etc.  The specific tract fits in with our operation quite well.  I hate borrowing money and it's only a $60,000 loan but finding financing right now is like pulling teeth.

I was told by one friend who's a mortgage broker that I picked the single worst day in the history of their company to come looking for a loan.  If the land banks will even return your calls, they're quick to tell you that you should have called a month ago.  I was told 10.5% 20-yr fixed by one land bank and the other said they won't do anything longer than 7-yrs right now.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have difficulty making that type of purchase than live in a blatantly socialist nation but financing is going to be tight for a while.
